Youth Series Rules
GENERAL RULES:
1. Falsification of name, age, signature of parent or failure to comply with rules will result in disqualification from the rodeos.
2. A no time will be received if a contestant is not present and ready when called to compete. After a contestant’s name is called 3 times, with 10-second intervals, it will be assumed that contestant is not present and he/she will be disqualified from the event.
3. Any unsportsman like conduct or unnecessary harassment by a parent or contestant will result in loss of points for the rodeo in which the incident occurred.
4. Birth certificates may be required for contestants if a question should arise.
5. NO alcoholic beverages allowed in the arena.
6. The same judges/flagmen must be used throughout the entire event unless the judge/flagman is excused due to illness/emergency.
7. Contestants may not be strapped in the saddle with any device. Rubber bands over stirrups are acceptable.
8. No refunds will be made unless it is an emergency. 9. All ages will be determined by January 1, the year the event is held.
10. All parents and/or contestant must acquire at least 5 work points in order for the contestant to receive awards.
DRESS CODE
Contestants must wear western attire in the arena. Cowboy boots and collared shirts are mandatory. No tee shirts, caps or tennis-type shoes will be permitted.
PROTESTS
1. If a person feels he/she has a legitimate complaint, he/she must notify Arena or Event Director to file a written protest accompanied by a PROTEST FEE of $100.00. Protests must be filed with the secretary before the close of the event in which the complaint occurred. If the complaint is ruled valid, the protest fee will be refunded. If the complaint is ruled invalid, the protest fee will not be refunded and will be considered a donation.
2. The protest will be heard by the Arena director and a minimum of 4 board members.
POINT SYSTEM
1. A 10 point system will be used for all around totals regardless of number of contestants in each age group.
2. Each contestant will receive a participation point per event.
TIEBREAKERS
1. All around ties will be broken by the greater number of the first places over the entire series. If tie still remains, the greater number of 2nd places will determine the tiebreaker, etc.
2. If two or more competitors have identical times in an event, placings will be combined and points split.
SPEED EVENT RULES
1. Contestant may enter arena at the speed of his/her choice provided arena conditions allow.
2. All arena gates are to be closed after contestant enters arena.
3. NO reruns due to tack or equipment failure
4. A contestant will receive a no time for breaking the pattern or back tracking. Contestant will not be able to re-run the patter after a no-time.
5. In cases requiring rerun, the contestant will have the option to re-run immediately or at the end of his/her age group of that event.
6. Speed event drags will be done at a maximum of every 10 runs. Depending on arena conditions they may be done with less runs.
POLE BENDING
1. The first pole is to be 21 feet from the starting line and each of the 6 poles shall be 21 feet apart. 2. Contestant may start either to the right or the left of the first pole and then run the remainder of the pattern accordingly.
3. A contestant may touch a pole in an effort to keep pole from falling.
4. Knocking over a pole will result in a 5 second penalty
CLOVERLEAF BARRELS/ STRAIGHTAWAY BARRELS
1. Contestant will start from behind the starting line and may either start to the right or left barrel and run the remainder of the pattern accordingly.
2. Knocking over a barrel will result in a 5 second penalty
3. A contestant may touch a barrel in an effort to keep the barrel from falling.
GOAT RIBBON PULLING
1. Goat shall be staked with a 10-foot rope and will be held in line with the entry gate.
2. A no-time will be received if the horse comes into contact with the rope and/or goat before dismount.
3. All arena gates are to be closed after contestant enters arena.
4. Age group 6 and under may have assistance at the end of the arena with dismounting and stopping of horse. The goat will remain held.
5. Age group 7-9 will have NO assistance with dismount or stopping of the horse. The rider must be fully dismounted before the horse can be caught.
6. Goat holder will release the goat when the flag man signals contestant has crossed the starting line.
7. Contestant must pull ribbon and run past flagman through poles for a time.
GOAT TYING
1. The contestant must be mounted on horse and ride from the starting line to goat, dismount, throw the goat by hand and tie 3 feet together. (if goat is down when contestant reaches it, the goat must be cleared from the ground).
2. Goat holder will release the goat when the flag man signals contestant has crossed the starting line.
3. A no-time will result if the horse comes into contact with the rope and/or goat at any time during the run.
4. Contestant must step at least 3 feet away from the goat for the 6 seconds to begin. If the goat does not remain tied for at least 6 seconds, the contestant will receive a no time.
5. Legs must be crossed and tied to qualify as a legal tie; there will be one or more wraps, a half hitch, or a secure knot. Once a contestant signals his/her tie complete, he/she may not touch the tie or the goat.
6. Goat will be changed based on number of entries as pre-determined by the goat judge.
7. Goat strings ONLY, no pigging strings allowed.
GENERAL ROPING
1. All stock will be chute run.
2. The back gate will be open.
3. The roper in the box, roper on deck, and the flagman will be the only ones allowed in the arena on horseback.
4. Horse must be moving out of the box to be legal catch; horse cannot stand still.
5. Ground money will be returned to all contestants for the event in which there are no legal catches. 6. If roper does not ask for calf, he/she must stop horse as soon as possible without throwing rope and re-run will be given. If contestant throws rope, it will forfeit possible re-run.
7. Roper is allowed only one loop.
8. Contestant will be responsible for providing someone to push his/her stock, if desired.
9. After contestant’s name is called 3 items, with 10 sec. intervals, stock will be turned out.
10. NO hazing of cattle is allowed past the score line.
11. Flagman reserves the right to flag roper out for abuse of cattle.
BREAKAWAY
1. Ropes are to be tied to the saddle horn at the know-end of the rope by a heavy string, in such a manner as to allow the rope to be released from the horn when the calf reaches the end of the rope.
2. A visible cloth or flag must be attached to the end of the rope tied to the horn to signal the breakaway.
3. Roper must catch the calf with clean bell collar loop.
4. Roper must stay mounted until calf breaks the string.
5. The contestant shall receive a no-time shouldhe/she break the rope from the horn by hand after the catch is made. 6. The rope must break away from the saddle horn before the calf enters the alley way.
RIBBON ROPING
1. The roper ropes and mugs the calf and the ribbon runner gets the ribbon off the tail and runs to the designated finish line. The roper must be touching the calf before the runner can remove the ribbon.
2. Catch as catch can. Rope must hold calf until roper gets hand on calf. Once roper has touched calf and rope comes off, roper must not lose contact with calf.
3. A neck rope must be used.
4. A short length of ribbon approx. 10 inches or more must be fastened with a rubber band to the calf’s tail.
5. If the runner sees there is no ribbon on the calf’s tail he/she must grab hair from the tail head.
6. Runner must hand ribbon to the flag judge. In case of no ribbon, must show hair.
7. If the calf is roped on the chute side of the flag line, the runner must cross the flag line for a time. The runner may cross the line from either side to receive time.
8. Once the calf enters the alleyway, the contestant will receive a no-time. 9. The roper and runner will be the only contestants allowed in the arena.
10. Ribbon runners are courtesy runners, entered in the rodeo and they must be in the same age group as the roper.
TIEDOWN
1. Catch as catch can. Rope must hold calf until roper gets hand on calf. Once roper has touched calf and rope comes off, roper must not lose contact with calf. Roping the calf without releasing the loop from the hand is not permitted.
2. Once the horse leaves the roping box any physical contact by anyone other than the roper will result in a no-time.
3. Rope must be tied hard and fast. Participant may use two loops.
4. If the calf is jerked down by the horse, the contestant must re-throw the calf by hand. If the contestant’s hand is on the calf when the calf falls, the calf is considered thrown by hand.
5. Any 3 feet must be tied with at least one complete wrap and have-hitch.
6. Once the contestant signals his/her tie is complete, he may not again touch tie or calf.
7. Contestant will receive a no-time for touching the rope to train his horse after giving finished signal or by dragging the calf after he remounts horse. The calf must remain tied for a period of 6 seconds after the contestant remounts and rope is off calf after the completion of tie, the 6 sec. time period is to start with roper is mounted, walks forward and has slack in the line.
8. A neck rope must be used.
9. Once the calf enters the alley way, the contestant will receive a no-time.
TEAM ROPING
1. Ropers may enter multiple times but must change ends or partners and designate what partner they want points with at registration.
2. There are three legal catches: head, half-head, and horns. Any heel catch behind both shoulders is legal if rope goes up heels.(If a front foot or feet is in the heel loop, it will be considered an illegal catch unless front feet slip out of loop before judge drops his flag).
3. Penalties: Five second penalty for one heel. Ten second penalty for broken barrier. Three loops per team.
4. Courtesy ropers are allowed but will not earn points.
